He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1989 from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome and specialized in Cardiac Surgery in 1994 at the University of Bari. He furthered his training with a course in echocardiography at Niguarda Hospital in Milan and training internships at the transplant center of Harefield Hospital in London, obtaining authorization for heart and lung transplantation.
Throughout his career, he has gained extensive experience in minimally invasive endoscopic cardiac surgery, an area in which he has worked as an independent consultant. He led the Cardiovascular Department for several years—covering interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac and vascular surgery—and headed the Cardiac Surgery Emergency Unit. He also played a key role in founding several specialized centers, including the Heart Transplant Center, Ventricular Assist Device Center, and Minimally Invasive Surgery Center.
Clinically, he has personally performed around 7,000 procedures, with a particularly strong track record in endoscopic surgery of the mitral and aortic valves, aortic root surgery, and complex aortic surgery. He also has extensive experience in off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, cardiac arrhythmia surgery, and transcatheter valve implantation (TAVI).
Dr. Maselli’s research focuses on mitral valve repair—in which he developed a patented technique for chordal replacement—rapid deployment aortic valves, and advanced techniques for aortic root and off-pump coronary surgery. His commitment to research and innovation has led to the development of new solutions to improve the safety and effectiveness of cardiac surgical procedures.
