Biography

Dr. Matilde Cossutta is a Pediatric Immunohematologist at the Pediatric Immunohematology Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele.

She graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 2015 and specialized in Pediatrics in 2023 at the Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome, affiliated with the University of Tor Vergata. In 2015, she obtained her medical license and registered with the Medical Board of the Province of Milan.

Currently, Dr. Cossutta is a pediatrician in the Pediatric Immunohematology Unit and the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (UTMO) at Ospedale San Raffaele, where she works in the ward, outpatient clinics, and Day Hospital.

She also serves as a Sub-Investigator in various clinical trials focusing on gene therapy for children with metabolic and immune system disorders. As of November 2023, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Immunology, Molecular Medicine, and Applied Biotechnology at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, conducting preclinical research at the SR-TIGET laboratory, focusing on developing new gene therapy approaches for lysosomal storage diseases.

During her studies, Dr. Cossutta trained at Mont Meru Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania, focusing on pediatric care in low-resource settings. During her pediatric specialization at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, she deepened her expertise in pediatric hematology, particularly in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, working in the department led by Prof. Franco Locatelli.

Her interests include:

  • Pediatric hematological diseases, such as thrombocytopenia, anemias (thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, spherocytosis), neutropenia, and bone marrow aplasia, focusing on diagnosing and treating these conditions;
  • Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, particularly in the context of non-oncological pediatric diseases;
  • Primary immunodeficiencies and metabolic disorders, with a particular focus on treatment via bone marrow transplantation and innovative ex vivo gene therapy.
