个人简介

Professor Stefano Gasparini is a consultant in Interventional Pulmonology (rigid and flexible bronchoscopy procedures; endobronchial ultrasound; transbronchial lung biopsy for peripheral lung lesions; therapeutic bronchoscopy) at the Thoracic Surgery Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, directed by Professor Giampiero Negri.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Ancona in 1979 and specialized in Pulmonology at the University of Naples in 1982. In 1985, he obtained a specialization in Respiratory Pathophysiology and Physiokinesitherapy at the University of Naples, followed by a specialization in Anesthesia and Resuscitation from the University of Ancona in 1990.

In 1981, he trained at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, focusing on transbronchial biopsy techniques for lung and mediastinal lesions.

From 2012 to 2019, he served as Director of the Pulmonology Unit at Ospedali Riuniti in Ancona. He held the position of Associate Professor (2012-2018) and Full Professor (2018-2022) of Respiratory Diseases at the Polytechnic University of Marche, where he also directed the School of Specialization in Respiratory Diseases from 2015 to 2022.

Professor Gasparini has held leadership roles, including heading the "Interventional Pulmonology" study group of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) from 2012 to 2014, and serving as President of the Italian Association of Hospital Pulmonologists (AIPO) from 2016 to 2018. In 2018, he was awarded the Killian Prize for the world's best bronchoscopy by the World Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (WABIP), and since 2022, he has been President of WABIP.

His main clinical focus is interventional bronchoscopy techniques, particularly for lung cancer diagnosis and staging. Between 1980 and 2022, he performed over 22,651 bronchoscopies, including 2,685 transbronchial lung biopsies, 4,210 transbronchial biopsies of mediastinal lesions (EBUS-TBNA), and 2,350 endoscopic bronchial surgeries using laser and/or bronchial stent placement.

Since 1984, his research has primarily focused on interventional pulmonology, specifically developing new biopsy techniques for diagnosing peripheral lung lesions and mediastinal masses. In recent years, his research has centered on bronchoscopy's role in the histological and biomolecular characterization of lung tumors, resulting in 373 scientific publications, 176 of which are in international journals, with an h-index of 29.
