Matteo Maria Bellone

Dr. Matteo Bellone is an immunologist at the Clinical Unit of Immunology, Rheumatology, Allergology, and Rare Diseases at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, directed by Professor Lorenzo Dagna.
In the field of Immunology and Immunopathology, he has been a subject matter expert at the University of Milan and is a contract professor at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University since its foundation.
After graduating with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1986, Dr. Bellone spent three years at the University of Minnesota (USA). He then specialized with honors in Allergology and Clinical Immunology at the University of Milan in 1989.
Dr. Bellone’s clinical work focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of immune-mediated diseases, with a particular interest in sarcoidosis. He is actively involved in clinical research at the unit led by Professor Dagna.
He also heads the Cellular Immunology Unit at San Raffaele Hospital. His research interests have centered on the pathogenic mechanisms in autoimmunity and immune response to tumors, viewing these as two sides of the same coin. His studies have clarified certain mechanisms underlying immune responses in diabetes and myasthenia gravis, as well as in cancer. Furthermore, his research has led to the identification of new immunotherapeutic approaches, successfully tested in cancer patients.
Dr. Bellone is the author of over 120 scientific publications indexed by PubMed, as well as a book and several book chapters.
He serves as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Immunology and Oncology and reviews manuscripts and funding requests for national and international agencies and journals.
He has been Secretary and Treasurer of the Italian Network for Cancer Biotherapy (NIBIT), of which he remains a member. He is also on the Board of Directors of the European Network for Cancer Immunotherapy (ENCI), and is a member of the Italian Society of Immunology, Clinical Immunology and Allergology (SIICA), and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
