Professor Emanuele Asti is a specialist in general surgery, Head of the General and Emergency Surgery Unit at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato. He also collaborates with Casa di Cura La Madonnina and serves as the Coordinator of the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Center at RAF First Clinic Respighi and S. Croce, established upon his appointment.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2002 from the University of Milan with a score of 110/110 cum laude. In 2008, he completed his specialization in General Surgery at the same institution with a score of 70/70 cum laude.

Since 2021, he has been an Associate Professor at the University of Milan, with teaching and training responsibilities including:

  • Degree Program in Medicine and Surgery, University of Milan Central Campus
  • Coordinator of the Semeiotica per Apparati 1 course
  • Lecturer for the Semeiotica per Apparati 2 course
  • Lecturer for the General Surgery course
  • Specialist School in General Surgery, University of Milan.

In 2022, he obtained the qualification for Full Professor in General Surgery.

Professor Asti is active in clinical practice, research, and the development of new techniques and technologies in minimally invasive surgery. He has extensive experience in treating benign and malignant esophageal, gastric, and colorectal diseases, approached both traditionally and entirely minimally invasively, having performed over 3,000 surgeries.

He also manages the treatment of all abdominal wall pathologies, including:

  • Primary hernias
  • Laparoceles
  • "Boundary" defects.

He introduced a closed-system peritoneal chemotherapy hyperthermia treatment in Italy for minimally invasive application.

He has undertaken training periods at prominent international centers, including:

  • University of Edinburgh, “Honorary Contract with licence to practice” Western General Hospital
  • Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris, Prof. Sarfatì “Visiting Surgeon - Service de Chirurgie générale, digestive et endocrinienne”
  • George R. Brown Center, Houston, Texas, USA “Postgraduate course-Esophageal surgery” SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons)

He is a Co-Founder and Vice-President of A.I.R.ES.–Onlus, the Italian Association for Esophageal Research, and Scientific Secretary of A.I.O.M. (Italian Association of Medical Oncology), as well as a contributor to the National Guidelines for esophageal cancer from 2018-2023.

Professor Asti is also responsible for the research and development of several devices, including:

  • L.A.D.® (Light Augmentation Device)
  • An atraumatic abdominal exploration system for critically ill patients (B.E.L.® - Bedside Explorative Laparoscopy)
  • An innovative esophagogastric junction biopsy system

He has conducted studies on:

  • Quality of life in patients operated on for gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, and Zenker's diverticulum
  • Improvement of diaphragmatic reconstructive techniques using medium and slow-resorption prostheses
  • Minimally invasive techniques in resective esophageal surgery
  • Fast-track pathways
  • Definition of predictive criteria for postoperative complications

He is the Principal Investigator for national multicentric and randomized studies (in collaboration with the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research IRCCS, Milan).

In the Third Sector, he co-initiated and promoted the “Progetto Salute: Stop al Reflusso” in collaboration with A.I.R.ES. and under the patronage of the Municipality of San Donato Milanese and the San Donato Group. This epidemiological investigation in San Donato Milanese aimed to assess the prevalence of reflux disease in the population and evaluate the diagnostic reliability of a multiple-response test as an early diagnostic tool.

Professor Asti focuses his research on digestive tract surgery, covering both functional and oncological pathologies.

He has published 129 scientific articles and has over 1,980 citations, with an H-index of 26.
